Baltimore keeps its ghosts close to the sidewalk. This walk starts at Edgar Allan Poe's grave and ends at his statue, and in between it finds the house where he lived, the tavern where he was found on election day, the hall where he insulted the wrong man, and a dozen other places where the city's history refuses to stay buried.
You'll meet the barber accused of plotting against Lincoln, the actor who came to Barnum's Hotel to recruit, a woman sold to a medical school for fifteen dollars, a fire whose official death toll was a little too tidy, and a flying man who never left the top of the Shot Tower. Fourteen stops, and every one of them is free to see from the street.
Checking your admission…
This is a self-guided walk, not an in-person guided tour, and it includes no museum admission. Westminster Burying Ground is open from dawn to dusk; check westminsterhall.org for closures. Old St. Paul's Cemetery is usually locked and is seen through the gate, and the Latrobe House is a private home. Keep to the sidewalks and cross at the lights. Your location is read only by your own phone. A shared link does not transfer admission.
