The Poe Walk

Our newest tour starts in the lobby of the Lord Baltimore Hotel and ends at Edgar Allan Poe's grave. It's a self-guided GPS walking tour you take on your own phone, written by Vince Wilson, who led the original Poe Grave Ghost Tours along this same route for years.

Take the Poe Walk · $7

A compass and a custom map on your phone lead you from stop to stop, with narration, archival photographs and the full text at every stop, and nothing sends you off to another map app.

Along the way you'll find the corner where Houdini hung upside down in a straitjacket above Baltimore Street in 1916, the Hippodrome, and the Everyman's earlier life as the Empire. At Westminster Burying Ground the walk goes through the gates: Poe's memorial and his original grave, a map of the whole graveyard with the generals, the Constitution signer and Baltimore's first mayor who lie beside him, Frank the body snatcher, the Poe Toaster, and the ghost stories the place keeps. A bonus stop takes you to Davidge Hall.

Walk it whenever you like; it stays on your account. The burying ground is open dawn to dusk, so check Westminster Hall for closures before you go.

It Starts with Houdini

On April 26, 1916, Harry Houdini hung upside down from the old Sun building at Charles and Baltimore and wriggled out of a straitjacket in front of a crowd that filled the street. The Poe Walk begins with a short detour to that corner, then heads west toward Poe.

Sunny all weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Friday reaches a high near 63 and drops to about 39 under clear skies after the show. Saturday tops out near 62 with a low around 40, and Sunday is the warmest of the three, near 65, with a low around 42. Bring a jacket for the ghost tour; the 19th floor does not care how warm it was at lunch.
