This Weekend at Poe's Magic: Magic, Ghosts & Brunch | September 25 to 27

Four chances this weekend to leave the house and come home slightly less sure of what you saw. The Magic Showcase takes the stage Friday and Saturday night, the Lord Baltimore Hotel opens its more talkative hallways for a Saturday night ghost tour, and on Sunday Gizele Monáe brings Drag Brunch LIVE, where every single note is actually sung.

There is no need to turn dinner and a show into a cross-town expedition. Settle in at LB Tavern inside the hotel before heading to Poe's, and on Sunday it is where Drag Brunch LIVE! happens too. If you are planning a rooftop drink at LB Skybar, check the hotel's posted hours first, since weather and private events can change them. Dining and drinks are separate purchases unless your ticket explicitly includes them.

Baltimore Comic-Con

Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, Baltimore Convention Center. Artists, actors, exhibitors, cosplay contests, and a great many people dressed as someone else. Hours are 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, which leaves time to change out of the cape before an 8 PM show. Kids 10 and under get in free with a paid adult admission.

Saturday: Samara Joy with the BSO

Saturday, September 26, 8 p.m., Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Jazz singer Samara Joy joins the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for its annual gala. It overlaps Saturday's Showcase, so pick your evening accordingly.

Sunday: Poe and Lafayette at Carroll Mansion

Sunday, September 27, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Carroll Mansion. Poe Baltimore presents a life-sized diorama and historical exhibit on the connection between Edgar Allan Poe and the Marquis de Lafayette, part of the city's America 250 programming. A good pairing with brunch.

The Games

Both home teams are out of town. The Orioles close their regular season at Yankee Stadium Friday through Sunday, and the Ravens face the Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday at 4:25 p.m., the first NFL game ever played in Rio. Brunch wraps up well before kickoff.

Edgar Allan Poe's story ends in Baltimore, and nobody has ever agreed on exactly how. On October 3, 1849, he was found delirious outside a tavern on East Lombard Street that was being used as a polling place, reportedly wearing clothes that were not his own. He died four days later, on October 7, at Washington College Hospital, without ever explaining what had happened to him. The theories have ranged from drink and illness to rabies to cooping, a period scheme in which voters were forced to vote repeatedly. He is buried at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, not far from the hotel.

The city marks the anniversary next weekend, when Poe Baltimore's International Edgar Allan Poe Festival & Awards runs October 2 to 4, with free festival grounds at Lexington Market. As a theatre that borrowed his name, we consider it family business.
